Sondra Perry: Black Girl As A Landscape at Monique Meloche Gallery, Chicago
A former Columbia University student of Sanford Biggers, Sondra Perry was invited by Biggers to participate as the porcelain projects featured artist for the duration of his first solo exhibition Chicago.
In this single-channel video, a camera pans slowly across the silhouetted body of a horizontally framed figure as she approaches or distances herself from the lens. Her breathing, blinking, and subtle movements become enormous events. As the distance between her body and the camera shrinks, the details of her dress and face are magnified and recognizable in eruptive yet subtle moments of beauty.
